Description
Florida Manatees are chunky, gentle, slow moving, grey oceanic mammals that have oval shaped body that tapers to a flat tail. Their tail resembles a ping-pong paddle. They have 3 to 4 nails on their forearms called flippers. Florida Manatees are wrinkled on their face and have whiskers on their trunk or nose.
The Manatees closet relatives are the Elephant and the Hyrax, which is a small rabbit or gopher like animal. The Florida Manatee is believed to evolve from an omnivorous animal that would wallow around in water. The average Manatee weighs 800 to 1,200 pounds and is 10 feet long.
